Future Samsung phones could come with flexible and ‘unbreakable’ screens, paving the way for the first truly foldable handsets.
According to a report by CNET, the South Korean electronics giant confirmed, on Wednesday, that it recently developed a phone panel which has even received certification from Underwriters Laboratories. This means that Samsung is ready to start shipping the panel in actual devices to consumers.
Samsung says that the flexible OLED panel consists of an unbreakable substrate with an overlapping window attached to it, Samsung said. It also claims that the panel is unbreakable, unlike other current commercially available flexible displays which break when subjected to extreme impact.
The panel is expected to have applications in non-phone segments such as automobiles, gaming, defence and more.
Samsung’s innovation comes at a time when it is getting harder for consumers to differentiate between various smartphones and their recurring features. They are now choosing to stick to their existing models instead of regularly upgrading them, leading to an eventual slowdown in smartphone demand.
In a statement, a spokesperson for Samsung Display Company Hojung Kim said that the hardened plastic window is additionally well-suited for portable devices due to the fact that it is lightweight and transmissive, making it quite similar to glass.
He added that the display passed demanding durability tests which included being consecutively dropped from four feet high 26 times. The phone continued to work normally while suffering zero damage to its body.
Most of Samsung’s flagship phones now have curved displays, paving the way for foldable phones. The closest to a foldable phone currently is ZTE’s 2017 Axon M, which has two screens connected by a hinge that can be folded out into a tablet. Samsung’s future devices will have one hinge-less OLED screen which can literally fold.
Samsung’s only competition in this innovation is Huawei, which is also currently working on a foldable screen design. Samsung Mobile president DJ Koh had previously told reporters to expect a folding phone by this year itself.

Samsung Galaxy S9 New Features
The strings reveal that Intelligent Scan “combines face and iris scanning to improve accuracy and security even in the low or very bright light.” The Below video will likely be included as an explainer when you’re setting up the Intelligent Scan feature.
There are multiple strings that note face unlock, iris unlock, and Intelligent Scan can’t be used at the same time, and that disabling one also disables the other two.
Intelligent Scan looks to be a replacement for entering a password, inputting a PIN, or drawing a pattern, though you will still be required to set up at least one of those as a more reliable alternative. The feature would be able to unlock your phone as soon as the screen turns on, without requiring you to swipe first.
The strings also suggest that you will be able to use Intelligent Scan not just to unlock your phone, but also to verify your identity in apps and sign into websites. Interestingly, none of the strings mentions a fingerprint reader.
3D stickers and Tag shot
Depth-sensing editing will apparently let you add stickers or images to pictures that were taken with dual cameras, and then adjust the depth of the stickers or images. Tag shot lets you take pictures and tag them with the current location and weather information.
Tag shot seems neat, but Samsung includes an important warning:
This camera mode will attach, embed, and store geographical location data and weather information within each picture that you take. Use caution when you send, share, distribute, transmit, or copy these pictures since they contain information about where the picture was taken.
Other strings mention features called Smart stay and Smart rotation. The former already exists in the Galaxy S8, S8+, and Note 8, keeping the screen on while you’re looking at it by using the front camera to detect your face.
You can check out the strings yourself here and here. Keep in mind that none of these features is final until Samsung announces them.
