Introduction
There is nothing worse than the spinning circle of death (buffering) right at the climax of a movie, or facing a lag spike just as you are about to take a headshot in BGMI.
We often blame our Internet Service Provider (ISP) like Jio or Airtel. But truthfully? Sometimes your plan is fast, but your settings are wrong.
As a Network Expert at GadgetGyani, I have seen 100Mbps connections performing like 2G because of bad router placement. Today, I will show you 7 simple tweaks to fix Latency and boost your speed without upgrading your plan.
The 7 Speed Hacks (2025 Edition)
1. Router Placement (The Golden Rule)
Most people make the mistake of hiding their ugly router behind the TV or in a corner of the room.
- The Fix: Wi-Fi signals go down and out. Place your router High up (on a shelf) and in the Center of your home.
- Avoid: Keep it away from metal objects, mirrors, and microwaves, as they block the signal.
2. Switch to 5GHz for Gaming
Most modern routers are “Dual-Band.” They emit two signals: 2.4GHz and 5GHz.
- 2.4GHz: Good for range (penetrates walls), but slower speed. Use this for Smart bulbs or browsing in the balcony.
- 5GHz: Shorter range, but insane speed. Always connect your Gaming PC or Phone to the 5GHz band to reduce Ping and get maximum Bandwidth.
3. Change Your DNS (The Gamer’s Secret)
Your ISPโs default DNS server can be slow. Changing it acts like a shortcut for your data.
- The Fix: Switch to Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) or Google (8.8.8.8).
- How: On Android, go to Settings > Network > Private DNS and type
1dot1dot1dot1.cloudflare-dns.com. This significantly lowers Latency in online games.
4. Kill Background Data Vampires
You might be playing a game, but your Instagram is downloading reels in the background or Play Store is updating apps. This eats up your Bandwidth.
- The Fix: Before gaming or streaming, clear all recent apps. On PC, check Task Manager to see if Windows Update is running silently.
5. Get a Router UPS (Essential for India)
In India, power cuts are common. Even if power returns in 1 minute, your router takes 5 minutes to reboot and reconnect.
- The Fix: Buy a mini “Router UPS” (costs around โน999). It keeps your Wi-Fi running for up to 4 hours during power cuts, ensuring your download doesn’t fail.
6. Reset Network Settings (For Mobile Data)
If your 5G/4G is acting slow despite full signal bars, the internal configurations might be glitched.
- The Fix: Go to Settings > System > Reset Options > Reset Wi-Fi, Mobile & Bluetooth.
- Note: This will erase saved Wi-Fi passwords, but it often restores full speed.
7. Check for ‘Leechers’ (Wi-Fi Thieves)
Is your neighbor using your Wi-Fi to download 4K movies? If too many devices connect, your speed drops.
- The Fix: Download an app like “Fing” or check your Router Admin page. If you see unknown devices, change your password immediately.
The Speed Test Challenge ๐
Don’t just take my word for it.
- Go to Ookla or Fast.com right now and check your speed.
- Apply Tip #1 (Placement) and Tip #3 (DNS).
- Test again. You will likely see a jump in speed or a drop in Ping.
Pro Tip: Gaming Needs Stability ๐ฎ
High-graphics games need stable internet more than fast internet. Apply these tips, and then test your stable connection on the best games. ๐ Check our list here: Top 10 High-Graphics Android Games of 2025.
Conclusion
Don’t blame your ISP always. Sometimes, a simple restart or moving the router 2 feet to the left fixes everything. Try these tricks before you call customer care to complain.
